Do what you can

Quotes & Inspiration 5 February 2026

Start where you are; acknowledging your current condition is the first step towards moving forward. Only look back to learn from past mistakes while being gentle on yourself. It does no good to beat yourself up on how or why you landed where you are, as guilt only holds you back. In my case I didn't listen to my family telling me I was working too many long hours, and guilt wasn't going to magically reverse that fact. It was done, I was now in a severely depressive state, and I had to deal with it.

Use what you have; whatever mental illness or debilitating condition you have your energy levels will be limited. It will take some time to adjust to these new levels and learn not to exceed them so as not to incur down time or symptom flareup. This can be an ongoing battle, one that after 4 years I still find hard to balance at times when I feel better and just want to get on and do things. It's usually my support team that remind me not to overdo it.

Do what you can; realise that you have new limitations and won't be able to do what you used to be able to. Set new revised goals for yourself, and revise these, when necessary, in line with your energy levels, and be realistic with yourself. At times all I have been able to do is get out of bed and make sure I have something to eat and drink during the day. Other times I have been able to do washing, ironing and make supper as well as help my husband with some admin work or work on the blog.

Everyone is unique so will react to treatment in their own way and need to find their own balance. Just remember you are not alone.
